Fix "Inventory policy is not included in the list"

Exact error message

  • Inventory policy is not included in the list

The inventory policy column ("Continue selling when out of stock", or Variant Inventory Policy in the old template) accepts only two values: deny and continue. Anything else, such as yes, no, TRUE or a value with a trailing space, triggers this error. The tool finds every such row and corrects it.

Why it happens

deny stops sales when the variant's stock reaches zero; continue lets customers keep ordering. Capitalisation doesn't matter (Shopify's own template uses DENY and CONTINUE), but the value must be one of the two words.

Wrong values usually come from a supplier file, an export from another platform, or a spreadsheet formula that writes TRUE/FALSE or Yes/No.

  • yes/no or TRUE/FALSE instead of continue/deny.
  • A translated value from a localised export.
  • A space or a non-breaking space around the word.
  • A shifted column: a missing comma earlier in the row moves another value into this column. The tool flags the row's cell count too.

How to fix it manually

Excel or Google Sheets

  1. Turn on a filter for the column (Data → Filter) to see every distinct value at once.
  2. Use Find & Replace (Ctrl+H) to replace each wrong value with deny or continue.
  3. Save as "CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited)".

Yes/no values from a supplier file, mapped to the two values Shopify accepts.

Fix it automatically

  • Checks every column with a fixed list of values: inventory policy, Status, Published, Weight unit, Inventory tracker and the true/false columns.
  • Maps clear synonyms automatically: no, false and stop become deny; yes and true become continue.
  • Shows values it can't map, with the allowed ones, so you choose.
  • Leaves values that are only in different capitalisation alone, because Shopify accepts them.

Checking and the preview are free. Downloads are free up to 50 rows; a larger file costs 1 credit.

The file is read and repaired inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded: only the row count and the platform are ever sent to us, so supplier prices and customer data stay private.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use deny or continue?

deny for products you can't restock quickly, so customers can't order what you don't have. continue for made-to-order or pre-order products, where overselling is fine.

Which other columns have a fixed list of values?

Status (active, draft, archived, unlisted), Weight unit for display (g, kg, lb, oz), Inventory tracker, and the true/false columns such as Published on online store, Charge tax and Requires shipping. The tool checks them all.

How much does it cost?

Checking a file and previewing the fixes is free. Downloading the fixed file is free up to 50 rows. A larger file costs 1 credit, and for 24 hours you can download the same file again in another format or encoding at no extra cost. No subscription needed; agencies that fix files every month can choose Pro: 300 files a month for $19.
