Import an Excel (XLSX) file into WooCommerce

Exact error message

  • Invalid file type. The importer supports CSV and TXT file formats.

WooCommerce's built-in product importer doesn't read Excel files: it accepts only CSV and TXT. Drop your XLSX below. The tool converts it to a UTF-8, comma-separated CSV, replaces formulas with their values, checks it against WooCommerce's columns and gives you a file the importer accepts.

Why it happens

The importer checks the file type before reading anything, so an .xlsx is rejected straight away. Renaming it to .csv doesn't help: an XLSX file is a compressed package, and WooCommerce then reports "The file is empty or using a different encoding than UTF-8".

Saving from Excel works with the right option, "CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited)". The plain "CSV" option uses your Windows code page, and in much of Europe it separates columns with semicolons, which WooCommerce reads as a single column unless you change the delimiter in the importer's advanced options.

How to fix it manually

Excel

  1. File → Save As → "CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited) (*.csv)".
  2. Save each sheet separately: a CSV holds only the active sheet.
  3. Check that SKUs, EANs and prices kept their format (leading zeros, no 1.23E+12).

Google Sheets

  1. File → Import the XLSX.
  2. File → Download → Comma-separated values (.csv).

Before and after

Before
Name;Regular price;SKU
Wool beanie;24,00;00123
After
Name,Regular price,SKU
Wool beanie,24.00,00123

A sheet saved as CSV on a German or Czech PC: semicolons and decimal commas. The converted file uses commas and decimal points and keeps the leading zeros.

Fix it automatically

  • Reads XLSX files in your browser.
  • Replaces formulas with their calculated values.
  • Writes a UTF-8, comma-separated CSV.
  • Checks WooCommerce's columns: Name, Type, Published, prices, SKUs, parents, image lists and categories.

Checking and the preview are free. Downloads are free up to 50 rows; a larger file costs 1 credit.

Choose a file

The file is read and repaired inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded: only the row count and the platform are ever sent to us, so supplier prices and customer data stay private.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a way to import XLSX directly?

Some paid import plugins read Excel files. With WooCommerce's built-in importer you need a CSV, which is what the tool produces.

My accents are broken after the import. Why?

The CSV wasn't UTF-8. Convert the file with the tool, or save it in Excel as "CSV UTF-8 (Comma delimited)" rather than plain "CSV".

How much does it cost?

Checking a file and previewing the fixes is free. Downloading the fixed file is free up to 50 rows. A larger file costs 1 credit, and for 24 hours you can download the same file again in another format or encoding at no extra cost. No subscription needed; agencies that fix files every month can choose Pro: 300 files a month for $19.
